| Description |
The glass was originally given by Richard Duke of Gloucester before 1483 when he became Richard III. the upper part of the window originally depicted the Day of Judgement, and the lower half had full length figures of the Virgin Mary and other female saints. The window has suffered over time and almost all the glass it once held has been lost. A few small fragments are now in the east window. Much of the glass in the window now came from the north nave clerestory windows. Starting from the top: Saint Laurence with gridiron Saint George in armour driving the spear into the mouth of the dragon on which he treads. Saint Christopher with the Christ Child on his shoulder gripping a wooden staff as he wades through the water. These are flanked by smaller lights, from the left, Saint Anne and the Virgin Mary, Saint Catherine, Saint Margaret, and the Virgin Mary. The central lights of the window depict from the left: Joachim, Bishop Leonard, principalities, seraphim (from the nine orders of Angels) these are flanked by two small lights with fragments, Saint Catherine (with wheel) and Saint Anne teaching the virgin. The lower row of lights L-R: Bishop Leger, Archbishop Alphege, Bishop Wannard (this is labelled incorrectly as Edmund on the pedestal), the virgin and child, Mary Salome with James and John and beneath this Saint Cecilia, Archbishop Martin (of Tours. Upper half missing) below which is Saint Margaret, Bishop Nicholas of Myra (imperfect) below which is Mary Magdalene. |
