Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Great Torrington Castle, Devon, viewed from east. The site of the bailey was levelled to form a bowling green (as happened also at Dunster Castle in Somerset) in the 19th century, and a crenellated stone wall was built around it by Lord Rolle of nearby Stevenstone, lord of the manor of Great Torrington. The low mound beyond is the remnant of the motte. To the left is the River Torridge, flowing away from the viewer towards its estuary at Bideford, 5 miles to the north-west. The steep hillside between the river and castle is Torrington Common. The distant bridge over the river is Taddiport Bridge.
