Vaughan Palmer Davies of Skomer Island Pembrokeshire Died at Narborough Leicestershire May 11th 1914. aged 87 years. Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord Sacred to the memory of these dearly loved parents. Erected by their devoted children He giveth his beloved sleep Angelica Ellen Davies, beloved wfe of Vaughan Palmer Davies and daughter of Edward Robinson, died at Narborough Lecestershire, March 25th 1913 aged 80 years. Her death is registered as ANGELINA the address given at probate is Sunnyside, Narborough. Probate to Charles Edward Davies, bank manager. Skomer island has been uninhabited permanently since 1950. In the late 1840's Edward Robinson, one of a new breed of scientific improvers, took the lease. In due course he passed it on to Captain Vaughan Palmer Davies, his son- in-law, in 1861. Palmer Davies farmed the island for thirty years and he left in March 1882 aged 66 years. He had survived a period of considerable agricultural decline from the late 1870's onwards. His financial situation throughout this period is unknown, but it is probably that he was cushioned with wealth he amassed as a young merchant seaman from his voyages between India and China. www.culturalecology.info/skomer/Abriefhumanhistory.html 1858 Vaughan Palmer Davies married Angelica Ellen Robinson, daughter of Edward Robinson. (5) 1861 Vaughan Palmer Davies returned from India, where he was the Captain of an opium brig and took over the lease of Skomer from his father in law, Edward Robinson. Thomas Mathias Davies (d. 1865) of Broomhill, Dale, Pembrokeshire, married Emily Alicia Palmer. They had a number of children including Vaughan Palmer Davies (b. 1826), Charles Frederic Davies (1828-1914), Emily Warren Davies (fl. 1848-1894), Myra Amelia Davies (fl. 1843-1894), Lucy Davies (fl. 1846-1854), John William Davies (fl. 1843-1859, died before 1894), Thomas Mathias Davies, junior, (fl. 1849-1866) and Henry Gilbert Rice Davies (fl. 1851-1890), a solicitor. Vaughan and Charles became sailors on opium brigs in India and some of the brothers also settled for a time in Australia. In 1858, Vaughan, by now a Captain, married Angelica Ellen (Nelly) Robinson, daughter of Edward Robinson (b. 1801) of Skomer, Pembrokeshire. In 1861 Vaughan returned from India to farm on Skomer Island, taking over the lease from his father-in-law. They had seven children, and their grandchildren included Vaughan Palmer Davies the younger (1895-1984).
