Description
English: Grave of first 3 American soldiers killed in WWI.

The graves of the first American soldiers to be killed on the battlefields of France in the war between the United States and Germany. The three men were Corporal James B. Gresham, Evansville, Ind., and Privates Thomas F. Enright, Pittsburgh, and Merle D. Gay, Glidden, Iowa, having been slain in the first German raid on the American trenches in Lorraine, Nov. 3. The graves lie on a hill overlooking a pretty village, and erected at the foot of the central inclosure is a French inscription which, translated, reads: "here lie the first soldiers of the great republic of the united states who died on the soil of France for justice and for liberty, Nov. 3, 1917"

This photograph, so far as known the first of this historic spot to reach the United States, was taken on the day after the burial and sent to the New York Times by Corporal L. Macary, a stretcher bearer of the Thirty-second French Infantry, Third Battalion.
