English: Public footpath and bikeway through the nature reserve (Naturschutzgebiet) „Alte Fahrt“ in Hörstel-Gravenhorst, Kreis Steinfurt, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The „Alte Fahrt“ is the former bed of the Mittelland Canal. No longer in use since the end of the 1980s, it was made a designated nature reserve in 2013.
Deutsch: Fuß- und Radweg entlang der Hörsteler Aa, hier im Naturschutzgebiet „Alte Fahrt“ bei Hörstel-Gravenhorst, Kreis Steinfurt, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Deutschland. Es handelt sich um die frühere Fahrrinne des Mittellandkanals, der seit dem Ausbau zwischen 1985 und 1987 nun etwas weiter westlich verläuft. Die alte Fahrt wurde in der Folge teils verfüllt, teils aber auch der Natur überlassen. Für die Aa wurde an dieser Stelle, wo sie früher durch einen Düker unter dem Kanal hergeführt wurde, ein neues Bett angelegt. 2013 wurde ein großer Teil der „Alten Fahrt“ als Naturschutzgebiet ausgewiesen. Die Idylle trügt jedoch: Die Aa gilt dort aufgrund der Belastung durch konstante Einleitung salzhaltiger Abwässer aus dem Ibbenbürener Bergbau als biologisch tot.
