Summary
[edit]DescriptionGrave of Sir Arthur Pearson - geograph.org.uk - 1121219.jpg |
English: Grave of Sir Arthur Pearson Arthur Pearson 1866-1921 was born in Somerset, became a journalist and then a newspaper proprietor, founding Pearson's Weekly and the Daily Express, which was the first newspaper to carry news rather than advertisements on its front page. He went blind from glaucoma in 1911 and when he became aware of the plight of soldiers who had lost their sight during WW1 he founded St Dunstan's, a charity to care for and rehabilitate blind ex-Service people.
(The flaming torch on the gravestone is its symbol.) He also supported the Boy Scout movement and founded a charity, Pearson's Fresh Air Fund, to give poor children country outings. see http://pearsonsholidayfund.org/annualreview2002/ABreathofFreshAir.htm |
