Summary

[edit]
Description Dipylon amphora, NAMA 804. Athenian funerary amphora, Late geometric I, circa 760 BCE. The main scene shows the prothesis and mourning for the dead, a woman who wears a long tunic. Over the bier is the shroud. Men (the most numerous, sometimes carrying weapons), women (with long tunics) and a child lament with the hands on their heads in the usual mourning gesture. Ceramic, H. 155 cm. Superimposed friezes of geometric designs, whose meanders, and animals grazing or at rest, are traced with a sure line. The composition of the painted areas is in accordance with the shapes of the large vase and with the harmony of proportions, the symmetria .
