s. Inconsequence, an extra large cropis often followed by weak growthin the spring, and a consequentsmall crop the following autumn.Vines of heavy bearing varietiesmay even be killed in this way,by repeated long pruning. This fact has been long recog-nized by practical grape-growers.Lately, Professor L. Ravaz.1 ofthe National School of Agricul-ture at Montpellier, France, hasadvanced the opinion that thedeath of vines, as a consequenceof overbearing, is much com-moner than is usually supposed. This overbearing may occur as aconsequence of various condi-tions other than long pruning. Some seasons are peculiarlyfavorable to heavy crops. Cer-tain diseases and injuries inducetemporary heavy bearing. What-ever the cause of abnormallyheavy crops, Professor Ravazbelieves that they may result inthe death of vines. This is theexplanation he gives of the deathof large numbers of vines in southern France, Algeria, and othercountries, and he ascribes our so-called Anaheim, disease to the samecause.

Fig. 16. Black Knot on 2-vear-old Zinfandel. Influence de la Surproduction sur la Vegetation de la Visne, by L. Ravaz,Coulet et fils, Montpellier, 1906. Bulletin 107 GRAPE CULTURE IN CALIFORNIA. 153 This is substantially the explanation given of the dying of vines inSanta Clara, in Bulletin 134, which was published before the regionwas declared infested by Anaheim disease. Whether this explanationis sufficient is still doubtful, though it is rendered probable by thefact that healthy young vineyards are now growing in Santa Clara,on the same soil where vines have been killed by Anaheim disease.
