Summary

[edit]
Description
English: This large pebble (~47 millimeters across) is from a Pleistocene-aged, nonlithified, pebbly silt unit in southern Ohio. The sediments are part of a lake deposit formed in the Teays River Valley as glacial ice blocked the flow of river water during the last Ice Age. The Teays River was a major watercourse before the Pleistocene, with headwaters in Virginia and Kentucky, and a main branch running generally northwestward through West Virginia and Ohio, then westward through Indiana and Illinois. The path of the Teays River is readily seen on satellite imagery of southern Ohio - it ran through Scioto County, Jackson County, Pike County, and Ross County. North from there, the Teays River's path is obscured by a covering of glacial drift.

The rock itself is granite, a common felsic, phaneritic, intrusive igneous rock that is dominated by quartz and potassium feldspar. It is very likely Proterozoic in age and derived from Canadian bedrock - probably Ontario.

Stratigraphy: apparently the Minford Silt, Lower or Middle Pleistocene, >780 ka (older than the last magnetic reversal)

Locality: roadcut along the Appalachian Highway between Tipton Lane and Germany Road, west of the town of Givens, eastern Pike County, southern Ohio, USA
