Summary

[edit]
Description

Granite dike cutting xenolith in the Precambrian of Minnesota, USA.

This is part of a famous outcrop in northeastern Minnesota - Confusion Hill. These are intrusive igneous rocks (principally light-colored tonalite & dark-colored diorite) of Late Archean age, part of the Giants Range Batholith.

The dark-colored mass seen above is a xenolith ("foreign-rock") that got incorporated into the magma before final solidification. The subvertically-oriented, dark pinkish-gray structure running through the xenolith is a granite dike.

Geologic unit & age: Giants Range Batholith, Neoarchean, 2.674 to 2.682 Ga

Locality: Confusion Hill outcrop - roadcut on the eastern side of northbound Rt. 169/Rt. 53, immediately north of roadside rest stop, northwestern side of Lookout Mountain, Laurentian Divide, just north of the town of Virginia, central St. Louis County, northeastern Minnesota, USA (47° 34' 40.71" North, 92° 32' 37.21" West)
