Granite in the Mississippian of North Carolina, USA This is an outcrop of "Mt. Airy Granite" in Mt. Airy, North Carolina. It is quarried nearby for the decorative stone trade. The rocks are part of the Mt. Airy Pluton and range from monzogranites (= true granites) to granodiorites. The pluton was emplaced during the Late Paleozoic. This was a time of subduction and tectonic collision in eastern America as the Appalachian Mountains formed. The slightly curved, gently dipping fracture surfaces are sheeting joints, which form by pressure release and exfoliation of large igneous masses. Geologic unit: Mt. Airy Pluton, Middle Mississippian, 331 to 337 Ma Locality: outcrop behind a drug store at the corner of Route 89 and Route 52 in the town of Mt. Airy, northeastern Surry County, northwestern North Carolina, USA (~36° 29.992’ North latitude, ~80° 37.254’ West longitude) |
