Summary
[edit]DescriptionGrange Wood near Ibstock - geograph.org.uk - 253733.jpg |
English: Grange Wood near Ibstock Part of the new National Forest.
62 ha Tender Scheme winner in 2000 on the edge of Ibstock with a mix of commercial forestry, multi-user access and heritage features. Native black poplars are planted along the stream and ancient willows have been pollarded in the wetland areas to prolong their lives. In total over 100,000 trees were planted between 2000 and 2001. The commercial element of the woodland includes cricket bat willow and birch coppice for horse jump poles. An 18th Century water ram is being restored with funding from the Local Heritage Initiative and assistance from the company who invented this pressurised irrigation system in 1850. When complete the sluices and bell chambers will be used to irrigate the new redbeds and wetland areas, much as in the past. See http://www.thefarm.org/charities/i4at/lib2/hydrpump.htm for a diagram of how hydraulic rams work. Part of the National Cycle Network Route 63 runs along the site and there are numerous permissive paths and bridleways as well as public footpaths. There is a car park in SK4209 |
