[edit]DescriptionGrand Markt, Brugge (5296746693).jpg |
I am visiting Brugge (known as Bruges in French and English) in West Flanders. Loving the Dutch architecture. This is my first-ever visit to a Dutch-influenced area. Flanders and northern Belgium speak Dutch, whereas Wallonia and southern Belgium speak French. The capital, Brussels, is officially bilingual, but in reality mostly speaks French. The animosity between the Dutch speakers and the French speakers is quite considerable, to a point where the best bet is to speak a mutually agreed neutral language, like English. I speak some French but zero Dutch, and this is the first time I am traveling in a region where I don't speak the local language. But given this linguistic standoff in Belgium, I'm doing just fine speaking English, and Europe is tourist-friendly to a point where I may not be able to speak the local language but can still manage a great experience anyway. Sure, train station platforms are marked "Spoor" in Dutch rather than something I recognize like "Voie" in French, but such quirks can easily be figured out. Back to Brugge, it used to be a booming medieval trade center, thanks to its proximity to the North Sea and its extensive network of canals. But as the sea link silted up and more modern ports in Zeebrugge and Antwerpen took over, it fell into decay, until being rediscovered as a medieval time capsule by more recent travelers. Its cathedral houses the only Michelangelo sculpture to leave Italy during his lifetime. |
