Description

(7467 x 3165) View towards the west from Yavapai Museum of Geology, South Rim, Grand Canyon National Park. The Battleship is visible on the left, Isis Temple highlighted in the center with Plateau Point below and completely in the shadows. Bright Angel Canyon on the right points in the general direction of Grand Canyon Lodge on the North Rim of the canyon. The museum was located here because all the geologic components of the formation of the canyon are visible from here at Yavapai Point. NPS photo by Michael Quinn.

How old is the canyon? How did it form? The exhibits at Yavapai Museum of Geology (formerly know as the Yavapai Observation Station) answer these and other geology questions. Displays include three-dimensional models, powerful photographs, and exhibits which allow park visitors to see and understand the complicated geologic story of the area. The historic building, located one mile (1.6 km) east of Market Plaza, features expansive canyon views. The bookstore offers a variety of materials about the area. Several ranger programs begin here. Open daily 8:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. (during the summer months)

The geology exhibits are divided into two sections. The first section focuses on what visitors can observe outside of the building’s large picture windows. These include exhibits on: How big the canyon is? How old the Canyon is? and on the Colorado River and its role in carving the canyon. Exhibits in the second section are each chapters in a story that explains how Grand Canyon formed. These stories are read from the rocks and fossils of Grand Canyon.
