(3784 x 4854) The confluence of Bright Angel Creek with Phantom Creek, deep within the Box, along the North Kaibab Trail in Grand Canyon National Park as seen on October 28, 2011. Much of the vegetation in Phantom Creek had been scoured away by a flash flood that took place a month earlier. NPS photo by Michael Quinn. The Box is a narrow canyon within the Grand Canyon where the North Kaibab trail is boxed in on either side by 1.7 billion year old Vishnu Schist. Here vertical rock walls that rise 1,200 feet/ 360 m above the trail. Though the trail here is not challenging from the perspective of elevation profile, be aware that this is a particularly dangerous stretch of trail during summer months. Because the entire 7.2 mile stretch is at low elevation, it becomes extremely hot from early morning to late afternoon.
