Muav ledges in Roaring Springs Canyon off the North Kaibab Trail in Grand Canyon National Park. NPS Photo by Kristen M. Caldon Muav Limestone: thickness: 350-600 ft. Deposited 505 million years ago during the Middle Cambrian period, the Muav Limestone is mostly composed of limestone and dolomite. It forms grey to orange cliffs within the Canyon. At the time the Muav Limestone was deposited, the water level had risen further and the Grand Canyon region would have been covered by a warm, shallow, subtropical sea, closely resembling the Bahamas of today. Fossils in the Muav include sponges, stromatolites, and echinoderms. Many springs emerge from the Muav Limestone. Springs are locations where groundwater naturally emerges at the Earth’s surface. Here water emerges because it can’t trickle down through the Bright Angel Formation below, which is an aquaclude. |
