Description

Sunday, March 31, 2013. View from the Tonto Trail looking down on a portion of Phantom Ranch. (near the center of photo - a brighter green patch. The Tonto trail crosses the expansive Tonto Platform approximately 3900 ft (1200 m) below the South Rim, intersecting both the Bright Angel and South Kaibab Trails. The Tonto Trail is a rough, unmaintained wilderness route. Washouts and narrow, eroding sections are common. Hikers must be prepared, mentally and physically, to deal with the harsh realities of inner canyon hiking outside the cross-canyon corridor.

The Tonto Platform is a desert scrub community, with warm desert plant species such as creosote bush, white bursage, brittle brush, catclaw acacia, ocotillo, mariola, western honey mesquite, four-wing saltbush, big sagebrush, blackbrush and rubber rabbitbrush.

All water sources along this trail must be treated, filtered, or boiled before drinking, with the exception of the treated water available at the junction of the Tonto Trail with the Bright Angel Trail at Indian Garden. Camping is allowed along the Tonto Trail by permit only, issued by the Grand Canyon National Park Backcountry Information Center.
