Summary
[edit]DescriptionGrand Canyon Moran Point03.jpg |
English: The Grand Canyon is a steep sided gorge formed by the Colorado River in northern Arizona, United States. View from Moran Point on the East Rim of Grand Canyon.
[Close-up of Moran Point]--The viewpoint, Grandview Point, is 3-mi west, (South Rim, (east terminus region)), and sits above the slope-forming members, Hermit Shale, then Supai Group (redbeds, with white layers).) The View of Grandview Point, can delineate the geology of the 4-units above the Supai Group 'redbeds'. The top 4 units of the the South Rim (and North Rim) are the Permian units, and "some interfaces" are not visible close-up, but at the 3-mi distance of Grandview Point, the 4 units are: 4--(white)-Kaibab Limestone cliff, 3--(dark, slope-former)-Toroweap Formation, 2--(very white/buff)-Coconino Sandstone cliff, 1--(very light, slope-former)-Hermit Shale. Also, the top unit of Supai Group 'redbeds' below is a cliff-former, the Esplanade Sandstone. Thicknesses of Kaibab and Coconino units are a maximum of about 300-350 ft. (Roadside Geology of Arizona), so the Esplanade Sandstone cliff-former unit below Grandview Point, may be 100-150+ ft maximum. At the western end of the Grand Canyon (east of Lava Falls, and Lava Flls Rapid), the south side of the Colorado River contains an erosion resistant platform, comprised of Esplanade Sandstone, and called The Esplanade--(see: Category:The Esplanade (Grand Canyon)). Deutsch: Der Grand Canyon ist eine vom Colorado River geformte tiefe Schlucht im nördlichen Arizona, Vereinigte Staaten. Im Bild: Blick vom Moran Point am East Rim des Grand Canyon. |
