| Description |
Grand Canyon may be one of the most awesome sights anywhere on Earth, and for the first time I experienced it in October 2000, as part of a 14-day, 6,000-mile, 11-state road trip. I am actually hiking about a mile into the canyon, using the popular Bridal Angel Trail. It is nine miles, one way, to the bottom of the canyon and the Colorado River; it is simply impossible to make the round trip without a few days of wilderness camping. A previous visit attempt in 1992 had brought me here, only to be shrouded in dense fog. After the 1992 and 2000 visits, I would only see Grand Canyon from passing aircraft on my way to/from points further east, until the very last week of 2011. |
