Adele Josephine Godoij (Mexico 4 februari 1863 – Rotterdam, 26 oktober 1918) was een internarionaal vertaalster. Ze is dochter van José Godoij, redacteur en directeur van El Heraldo en Adelina Bounos de Godoy correspendente voor bladen Chronicle en Examiner in New York. Moeder en dochter kwamen in 1883 naar Amsterdam om verslag te doen van de Wereldtentoonstelling. Adele zocht werk bij het toneel, terwijl ondertussen Nederlands lerend. Heimwee zorgde ervoor dat de twee terugverhuisden naar New York; Godoy leverde aldaar een Engelse vertaling (vanuit het Spaans) van The Martyr of Golgotha (El mártir del Gólgota van Enrique Pérez Esrich). In 1887 waren beide dames weer terug in Amsterdam; New York beviel ten slotte niet. Hier terug vestigde Adele Godoy zich in Amsterdam als vertaalster. Ze werd daartoe beëdigd in de talen Spaans, Engels, Frans en Italiaans. Ze gaf ondertussen ook les in die vakken. In 1893 vertrok ze naar Rotterdam om aldaar les te geven. Ze bleef als vertaalster werken, zowel op gebied van de literatuur, handel en rechtspraak en was tevens correspondente voor bladen in New York, Londen, Havanna en Madrid. Ze werd nog voorgedragen aan de Minister van onderwijs om examinatrice te worden tijdens de examens van het Spaans Middelbaar Onderwijs, maar een hersenziekte had haar al danig aangetast. Ze was lid van de Maatschappij der Nederlandsche Letterkunde te Leiden. |
