Description |
English: A gravel trail makes a sharp switchback on a steeply graded hill, dense with vegetation. Crater Rim Historic District. The Kilauea Iki Trail was built by the CCC in 1934. Stone riprap and dry-stacked retaining walls were used to support the steep slopes and switchback corners. One of the rustic and naturalistic design principles that guided park development in the 1920s and 1930s is the unobtrusiveness of human-built forms in the natural landscape. Where manipulation of the ground was necessary, it was done in a way to blend them into the surrounding topography.
