English: 21 November 2006:
La Trobe Statue Unveiled A statue of Charles Joseph La Trobe, gifted to the Library by the La Trobe Society, was unveiled today. The work, by eminent sculptor Peter Corlett, celebrates the National Trust's Year of La Trobe and honours one of Melbourne's founding fathers. Melbourne's first Lieutenant Governor following the proclamation of the Colony of Victoria, La Trobe was influential in many of Melbourne's government and cultural institutions, and along with figures such as Sir Redmond Barry, was one of the State Library's founders. The statue was unveiled by the Governor of Victoria, Professor David de Kretser AC. Special guests included the Hon John Cain, President of the Library Board of Victoria; Rodney Davidson AO, OBE, President of the La Trobe Society; Charles La Trobe Blake, the great-great-grandson of Dr Charles Joseph La Trobe; Dr Dianne Reilly, the Library's La Trobe Librarian; and Mr Peter Corlett, the sculptor. The 3m-high bronze has been installed on the Library's north lawn, adjacent to La Trobe Street. It depicts him reading the proclamation of separation and looking towards the city he helped shape.
