Government Navajo Indian school, Tohatchi, New Mexico, 1901
Photograph of the Government Navajo Indian school, Tohatchi, New Mexico, 1901. The large one-story brick building sits at the top of a rise. Eleven windows punctuate the long facade; nine windows and a door on the short end. A woman and several children are on the wooden stairs leading from the door. A round stone tower supports a wooden water tank to the right of the school. A few small trees grow in the foreground near a scattering of rocks. Hills rise in the background under a cloudy sky.
