Description
English: To celebrate International Archives Day, we asked a representative from each of our 4 regional offices to explain their role & select their favourite record. You can see the selections on our Flickr account and check our Twitter account for further International Archives Day celebrations.

Hi, I'm Wendy, one of the Archivists at Auckland Regional Office. Here we all do a variety of archives work, including taking in transfers, listing and context work, helping researchers both in the reading room and through our remote reference service. I also enjoy outreach work, providing presentations about Archives New Zealand to groups from family historians to post-graduate students, preparing online exhibitions and also "tweets".

I have chosen this 1888 Department of Works drawing of the side elevation of old Government House, built in 1856 it was the seat of government until the capital was moved to Wellington in 1865. It was then used as the vice-regal residence, and in 1953 the Queen broadcast her Christmas message to the Commonwealth from the house. In 1969 the house was transferred to the University of Auckland.

In 1888 there was both a wine cellar and beer cellar in the basement, the ground floor rooms included a ballroom, dining room, drawing room, a butler's room, servants' hall, and of course, kitchen, scullery and pantry. On the upper floors there were 14 bedrooms.

The strange glass structure to the left of the porch is a greenhouse, and the window to the right is that of the Aide de Camp's room. I love the delicate colouring and careful drawing of these nineteenth century plans.
