Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Located at 4030 Rensch Road on a site that's now almost completely surrounded with villa-style student housing and other development connected with the nearby North Campus of the University at Buffalo, the Kuhl House - seen here in July 2020 - was designated a historic site by the Town of Amherst Historic Preservation Commission by virtue of its status as one of a very few surviving stone farmhouses dating back to the pioneer era of the town's early history. The house belonged to Gottfried Kuhl (1803-1875), a native of the village of Neusatz, Bad Herrenalb in what is now far southwestern Germany; he came to Amherst about 1830 with his wife Catharine and, according to the historic survey commissioned by the town, built this house about 1855. Architecturally, its vernacular design lacks much distinction, but the pedimented portico in front shows influence from the then-popular Greek Revival style. In 2017, a local development company bought the site seeking to erect a new four-story hotel but agreed to preserve the house for its historic value; the four-story Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott Buffalo Amherst/University opened in 2018.
