Summary
[edit]English: Representations of crosses raised on an ornamental base and decorated with floral motifs or with interlaced bands are usually found in the margins of Armenian manuscripts, full-page crosses occurring only in the earliest known books (ninth and tenth centuries). Such crosses form a prominent feature of the art of Eastern Christendom, especially of Syrian art. In many cases the ornamental and compositional treatment of the crosses is evocative of Armenian khachkars.
