Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The "Gordon red" tartan (not to be confused with the district tartan known as "old Huntly" and sometimes also called "Gordon red" [1]). This image is not exactly full-sett, and cannot tile horizontally and vertically; this zoomed out and centered view is just to show the pattern better. The tartan was first recorded in the 1930s–1950s collection of James Mackinlay, but is probably older. It is of a "busy" (and asymmetric) style frequently seen in tartans that pre-date the Dress Act 1746. It is very similar to an even more asymetric tartan, "stripey" with differing warp and weft, in a 1765 portrait of regimental commander Gen. William Gordon by Pompeo Batoni. Scottish Register of Tartans notes on this pattern: "J. Mackinlay's collection of hand coloured tartan strips is in the Scottish Tartans Society archive." This is a repeating, not mirroring, tartan. SRT-provided thread count (in "..." notation): ...A12 G12 R18 K12 R18 B18 W4 C16 W4 K32 A12 W4 B32 W4 G36... (A = azure, C = crimson, and the blue (B) in this is considerably lighter than usual, a hue called "Balmoral blue" or "ancient blue" in various databases/software.).
