DESCRIPTION
Photograph of Goose Pond in Keene New Hampshire. This pond was called Crystal Lake by some in the 1860s, and was also known as Sylvan Lake in the 1900s.
The failure of the town well and cisterns during a great fire in 1865 prompted the formation of a committee in 1866 which selected Goose Pond to be the public water source. Pipe was finally laid and water introduced to Central Square in 1869 and to neighboring areas of town shortly thereafter. The original system had 48 hydrants.
"In 1869 when an aqueduct brought water from Goose Pond into the city, the names Sylvan and Crystal were applied to the source. Perhaps it was thought the water would taste better with a more aesthetic name."
