Description

Arms of Gooch of Mettingham, Suffolk: Per pale argent and sable, a chevron between three talbots passant all counter-changed on a chief gules three leopard's faces or, as seen on mural monument

in All Saints' Church, Mettingham, to William Gooch (d.1685), Esq., and Thomas Gooch (d.1688), Gent. (Same arms for Gooch baronets (cr.1746) of Benacre Hall, Suffolk, per Montague-Smith, P.W. (ed.), Debrett's Peerage, Baronetage, Knightage and Companionage, Kelly's Directories Ltd, Kingston-upon-Thames, 1968, p.336). "These gentlemen were ancestors of the present Sir Thomas Sherlock Gooch, 5th Baronet (1767–1851), of Benacre Hall in Suffolk, whose family appears to have sprung from this village (i.e. Mettingham). In 1537, I meet with the name of Thomas Gooch, as witness to a deed, now preserved in the parish chest".
