Summary

[edit]
Description

This is the gondola from the first Transatlantic balloon flight, which took place from the 11th to 17th August 1978. The crew of Ben Abruzzo, Maxie Anderson and Larry Newman were all from Albuquerque, so the gondola was named “Spirit of Albuquerque”. Carried by a helium filled balloon, the gondola was designed to float in case of an emergency landing in water. The journey covered the 3,099 miles from Presque Isle, Maine, to Miserey in Normandy, France, in 137hrs 6mins at an average speed of 22mph and at altitudes between 3,500ft and 24,950ft. Later donated to the Smithsonian Institute and seen on display at the Steven F. Udvar Hazy Center as part of the National Air and Space Museum. Washington Dulles International Airport, Chantilly, Virginia
