Summary

[edit]
Description

Gondola chair by Joseph Urban, on display as part of the "Jazz Age" exhibit at the Cleveland Museum of Art in Cleveland, Ohio, in the United States.

Urban (1872-1933) was an Austrian-born architect, illustrator, and production designer. He trained as an architect with the Vienna Secessionist movement, an architectural and design movement which rejected Historicism and advocated "to each age, its own art". Urban immigrated to the United States in 1911 to become the art director of the Boston Opera Company.

The gondola chair was developed in France in the 1760s. Its shape is reminiscent of the prow of a Venetian gondola: Rounded top, strong inward curve to support the lower back, and a back which swoops sharply downward and forward to form a hint of a side panel around the buttocks.

This particular chair was made in 1921 at the Wiener Werkstätte ("Vienna Workshop"), a modern design studio in Vienna, Austria. It is made of painted wood, with silver leaf on the lower front and mother-of-pearl inlay along the top of the arms and back. The upholstery is a reproduction of the original design, was was commonly used by Wiener Werkstätte.
