Summary
[edit]DescriptionGolf club-old mill, Beverley (geograph 6597572).jpg |
English: Golf club/old mill, Beverley, East Riding of Yorkshire, England. What must be one of very few cases where the 'CH' for club house, and the windmill symbol on an OS map refer to the same building. The former mill, known as Union Mill and also as Anti Mill, is one of two remaining on Beverley Westwood. The one here is less of a landmark than the Black Mill, being shorter and less central. It forms part of the club house at Beverley and East Riding Golf Club Link whose course takes up part of the Westwood pastures. Union Mill was opened in 1802 after some Beverley residents formed a cooperative society in 1799. Various millers rented the mill, including James Thirsk, producing his famous ‘Beverlac’ flour there until 1897. When he ceased operation, the mill was dismantled and shortened. The tower was then incorporated into the club house of the golf club, which was formed in 1889. |
