Summary

[edit]
Description
English: As seen in April 2022 from the parking lot of the 7-Eleven at the corner of Auburn Avenue, a pair of ghost signs grace the south exterior wall of the five-story warehouse at 185 Grant Street in Buffalo, New York. The older of the two is seen at the top, advertising "GOLDHAGEN STORAGE CO - STORAGE, CARTING, PACKING & SHIPPING". It likely dates from the very early 20th century: Norwegian immigrant Ole Goldhagen was a furniture maker by trade, but had most recently been employed as a manager at the Niagara Storage Company at the time he had this five-story building constructed in 1901. While primarily a storage facility as its name indicates, Goldhagen also did a brisk side business selling furniture (the text "WE SELL FURNITURE", faded to the point of borderline illegibility, is seen at the bottom of the ad) and after his death in 1933, it was that end of the operation that subsequent owners emphasized. The Goldhagen name was finally retired in the early '60s by then-owner John Eppolito. Of much newer vintage is the sign for Lorigo's Meating Place (sic), the Italian grocery and butcher shop operated in the building by Vincent D. ("Jimmy") Lorigo from 1986 until his retirement in 2020.
