e pairedfins and protruding eyes otthe Telescope, together withthe dorsal fin and long verte-bral column of the Comet; towhich is attached a very longdeeply bifurcated double tail.Another peculiarity is the en-tire absence of the anal fin. This singular fish is so out ofbalance, due to the long spineand the great mass of tail, that it rests upon the water plants balanced on the tail, and the elongatedspine is so mobile that when it is curved under the body, the head of thefish is sometimes wrapped into the folds of the tail. Another abnormalityis shown in Figs. 33 and34. This white fish hasthe body shaped like anegg, and when viewed fromabove, has very much theappearance of a white rat. Many other singu-larities could be cited, and when it is remember-ed what faithful copyistsboth the Chinese andJapanese are, there canbe no doubt that thegoldfishes depicted on their Ceramics and FIG. 33—Lawsons The White Rat Lateral view Two-thirds life size 64 FIG. 32—Agards WonderTwo-thirds life size
Text Appearing After Image:
GOLDFISH BREEDS bronzes are accurate re-productions of fishes bred by them. Some of theseare so astonishing in form and colors that to the layman thev would appearto be willful exaggerations or caricatures, but to the experienced goldfish culturist are easily withinthe range 01 possibilityand may be accepted byhim without question. This tendency to varia-tion on the part of thegoldfish is one of theprincipal points of inter-est in its culture, as anyalevin may have a distinct character of its own and be either a wonder inits way or a sport not worth the trouble of raising. It should be statedthat young fishes of marked abnormality do not usually survive which isvery often also the case with those considered the most perfect by thefancier.
