TRIANEA This sub-tropical floating water plant, Trianeabogotensis, Fig. 137, with its heartshaped, slightlyroughened and waxlike green leaves, is an attractivefloating plant, which develops with remarkablerapidity in the moist atmosphere of the greenhouse,but dwindles in size of leaf and loses vigor in thehousehold aquarium. The pendant roots harborinfusoria and entomostraca and are eaten by thefishes. It makes a fine appearance in the aquarium,but will not serve as an oxvgenator. The leavesdevelop in the centre of the clusters and the blossomis small and yellow with a white centre. As a shade plant in out-of-doors tanks, it is tobe recommended and grows well during the warmsummer months, if not exposed to too strong sun-light. May be had of florists. AQUATIC PLANTS OF FRESHWATER root and propagates both by seed and by summer runners, upon whichbuds are developed which become young plants. The kidneyshaped leavesgrow on long stems, and the \l/2 inch in diameter flowers have three petals upon an erect scape.It is fairly hardy andeasy to propagate inponds in a mild climate,but does not thrive wellin the household aqua-rium. Many of thewater insects and mostof the pond snails at-tack its leaves. Atthe approach of coldweather the leaves de-cay and the winterbuds sink to the bot-tom of the pond, torise to the surface with the advent ot warm weather. The plant is sub-tropical and will not survive very cold weather. Of the floating plants itis one of the largest fancied by aquariist, and the fine white blossoms areattractive and of pretty form. In the greenhouse the plant survives foryears. May be had of dealers. A similar plant, the American Frog-bit,Limnobium spongia^ having dark-green heartshaped leaves, purplish on theunder side, is a
