Description

Another long shot of the Amritsar icon, the Harmandir Sahib/ Golden Temple. If you look closely you will see the surging crowds on the causeway leading to the main temple. Although it is the holiest shrine for Sikhs, the Harmandir Sahib/ Golden Temple is an open house of worship for all men and women, from all walks of life and faith- everyone is welcome here. The temple has a square plan with four entrances (one of which we saw earlier with the fabulous clock tower) and is built in the centre of a pool or 'sarovar'. There is path circum navigating the pool. As you can make out in this picture, the Golden Temple is actually a collection of buildings around the sanctum and the pool. One of these is Akal Takht, the chief center of religious authority of Sikhism. The Akal Takth is located roughly at the other end of the causeway. The Granth Sahib or holy book of the Sikhs is taken in procession from the Golden Temple, across the causeway and into the Akal Takth when the actual temple closes for the night.

This is done with some pomp and ceremony (see subsequent pictures later in this album) and is again repeated in reverse at dawn when the holy book is brought back into the temple. (Amritsar, Punjab, northern India, Nov. 2017)
