Animal characteristics: Head-Body Length: 22-32 cm; Weight: 120-394 g; Identification: The golden-mantled ground squirrel is a golden brown color with a tawny or russet mantle on the head and shoulders. It has a white stripe down the side of its back bordered by black, and white fur around its eyes; Habitat: Mountains, mixed or coniferous forests; Diet: Omnivore: fungi, nuts, foliage, insects, bird eggs, small vertebrates, carrion; Reproduction: After gestating for 26-33 days, females give birth to 4-6 young in the early summer. Each female only has one litter per year; Behavior: Golden-mantled ground squirrels hibernate from October to May each year. Cheek pouches are used to carry food; Status: No special status.
