Presently, without looking up, he said, It was not a stone that cracked this glase. Gertrude raised her eyes. Nor was it anybodys elbow, said he. Gertrude shut her book. Nor a broomstick, he added. Gertrude rose from her chair. Nor a pistol-ball, he continued. What then? inquired Gertrude, wonderingif the glazier knew. Do you see, said he, a white speck on theedge of this broken piece ?
