Summary

[edit]
Description

One of many species of Pseudocyphellaria native to Chile. (One species list I saw put the number at 53!!) This is one of my favorite for (I think) obvious reasons.

The genus is distinguished by little usually raised dots on the lower surface where the medulla protrudes through the tomentum or felt that usually covers the underside. They are often called the "speckle belly lichens" as a result.

It is particularly diverse in southern Chile, probably where the genus originated hundreds of millions of years ago. North America, on the other hand has only relatively few species. Instead the mostly ground-dwelling Peltigera and Cetrarioid genera are disproportionately well-represented. It is a topic of much playful speculation among at least some lichenologists. And probably no one else.

Nevertheless, I was tremendously excited to get a chance to study the dozens of species of this beautiful genus, and have not been disappointed in the least, having taken notes on at least 20 different species already(!)
