Title |
Gold posy ring 2007T308 |
||
Description |
English: 17th Century gold posy ring. Band consisting externally of ten circular bosses with corded borders. Between each boss on both sides of the band are smaller round knops. The flat internal surface is inscribed 'God gives in crease to Loue and peace'. The 's' of crease is very elongated and almost in the form of an f missing the cross bar. The tail of the letter 'p' extends backwards to underline the last two letters of 'and'. See Oman (1974, plate 58 c) for a very similar example with a different inscription. The style of the lettering is consistent for the 17th century. The British Museum has two rings with the same inscription, though one example of this has been inverted to read 'To love and peace God gives increase' and in the other example 'increase' has been spelt 'incrase'.
External diameter 21mm, internal diameter 17mm, width of band at max. 7mm. Weighing 3.22g. |
