Title
Gold head-dress pin or bodkin
Description
English: A slightly bent gold pin. The shaft is a flattish oval in section and tapers from 3.14mm to 1.49mm at the point. The broad end is finished with a simple knop. Below this is a round hole 1.5mm in diameter and an oblong hole 8.50mm long by 1.10mm. 5.12mm further down is a slightly smudged makers mark, stamped onto the metal, in the form of two letters possibly G over W. The pin is otherwise undecorated.

This type of headdress pin, (sometimes referred to as a bodkin because of the ribbon threading potential of the oblong hole) dates to the seventeenth century. A similar example is in the collections of Norfolk Museums (Margeson 1993, 9, Plate III). 2005T326 [IOW-305174] has a similar knop terminal. See also in silver 2006T168 [BUC-13CF06], 2006T462 [BUC-6A6E01] & 2006t478 [BUC-6C1F60], all from Bucks. In terms of age and as the object contains a minimum of 10% precious metal it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.
