Title |
Gold finger ring |
||
Description |
English: A wide gold finger ring which has a cast 'cut-out' design with inscribed detail. The design is framed by a strip border above and below decorated with vertical and oblique lines. The main part of the pattern consists of two erotic scenes or two depictions of the same event. A naked shaggy headed, bearded human-like male with a horse like tail crouches over the hind quarters of a donkey-like animal. The 'donkey' looks back at the 'man' who has his erect member pointing at the 'donkey's' rear it in one scene. In the other scene the man has entered the animal.
This ring has been examined byseveral leading Roman and medieval specialists at the British Museum. They felt they could not definitely say that its style, subject or workmanship were Roman or medieval and could not find any parallels. They also could not definitively say that it was a fake either. It was suggested that possibly analysis of the metal might verify its date |
