Title
Gold finger ring
Description
English: Roman gold finger ring, much bent and distorted but largely intact. The hoop comprises a plain circular strip of gold, on top of which has been soldered an overlay of decorative filigree wire, four bands of twisted wire alternating with three bands of plain. The hoop has been soldered to the back of an ovoid bezel, with the ends of the hoop flattened and splayed; the bezel consists of a separate piece of sheet gold with similar applied filigree ornament of alternating plain and twisted wire. This rises to form an ovoid box setting for an intaglio. This is orangey-red carnelian, much damaged, with traces of the original design, consisting of a standing figure, probably facing right, with what appears to be flaming altar on the right; behind the figure are traces of what appears to be an ear of corn.

The cornelian intaglio has been examined by Martin Henig who states that the style is not far away if at all from the gems in the Snettisham Roman Jeweller's Hoard and has identified the device as Bonus eventus holding an ear of corn in one hand and in the other probably a patera over a lighted altar. Other examples of such devices with an altar are known from elsewhere (see Henig Britain, nos 218 and 219) but are made in nicolo-glass.

Discussion: there are no exact parallels for the ring, but the style is similar to rings in the Hoxne treasure (Johns 2010) and Thetford (Johns & Potter 1983).
