| Description | Gold King Mansion sign at Gold King Mine. "Gold King Mansion. Photo: Mohave Museum of History and Arts. The Gold King Mansion was built in 1929 by the Gold King Corporation. The corporation used this ornate structure to entertain wealthy investors and to house the mine foreman. The nearby Gold King Mine produced gold, silver, copper, and lead, but production never reached the level the miners had hoped for. The stock market crash in October 1929 brought an end to the mine and to the short-lived mansion. The mansion's roof and walls are made of poured concrete, a construction technique rarely found in northwest Arizona mining camps. The structure was built in two stages; the western rooms were built first, and the eastern rooms were added later. The historic photo depicts the structure's early configuration." |
