Summary

[edit]
Description
English: One of the best known pagodas in Japan is the five-storied pagoda located at the entrance of the Tōshōgū Shrine, Nikkō. (A shrine dedicated to Tokugawa leyasa, founder of the Tokugawa shogunate.)

The shrine was established in 1617 and the pagoda was built 33 years later as a donation by Sakai Tadakatsu, the feudal lord of Obama in Wakasa Province. The first pagoda burned in 1815 and the one we see today was rebuilt in 1818 by Sakai Tadayuki, a feudal lord of the same lineage.

Designated an “Important Cultural Property” by the Agency of Cultural Affairs, the pagoda has a height of 36 meters, with no floors inside. Each storey represents an element–earth, water, fire, wind and aether (or void)–in ascending order. Inside the pagoda, a central shinbashira pillar hangs from chains to minimize damage from earthquakes.
