Summary
[edit]DescriptionGods and Demigods from the Circle around Dionysus Bacchus, Altes Museum Berlin (5399191319).jpg |
Rome, town in Vesuvian area, Benevento (Italy) Bronze, 5th century BC - 2nd century AD In Greek and Roman Antiquity, two gods in particular were connected with sexuality: Athrodite/Venus and Dionysus/Bacchus. The god of wine, festivals and theatre was surrounded by a host of human and hybrid followers: satyrs, maenads, Sileni. The Shepherd god Pan and the fertility god Priapus also belonged to his larger circle. Some of these being animal body parts (horse's tail and ears in the case of Satyrs, goat's legs and horns in the case of Pan), and unrestrained sexual activity was their characteristic. Caricatures of slaves and outsiders with grostesquely enlarged genitalia were popular since Hellenistic times. |
