| Description |
English: The church was owned by the Archbishopric of Canterbury in the 11th Century, and mentioned in the Domesday Book as "Gomersham". The nave and part of the chancel are from that time. Canterbury Cathedral Priory owned the church until 1540 when Henry VIII dissolved the Priory.
The chancel was extended in 13th C. There is a bas-relief from 12th C. possibly of Thomas Becket, killed in Canterbury Cathedral in 1170. The west door of the nave is blocked, with a tympanum of re-used dog-tooth blocks. The tower has a 12th C Romanesque apsidal chapel. There are 6 bells. In 1865 the south aisle, transept and porch were built, Georgian furnishings were removed and the building restored and refurbished. There are associations with Jane Austen, as her brother owned Godmersham Park. |
