Goddess Uma, Philadelphia Museum of Art

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Goddess Uma at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The description from the museum reads: "Goddess Uma. Around 1000. India (Tamil Nadu). For use in a procession. Bronze. Uma (the name for Shiva's wife, Parvati, when she is paired with her husband) stands in the classic "three-bend" pose - knee flexed and hip slightly swayed - that imparts sensuous grace to many Indian sculptures. Traditional marks of female beauty include her large eyes, high nose, full lips, rounded shoulders, and the three "beauty-lines" between her breasts and waist. But when this sculpture was prepared for a festival procession she would have been adorned in a silk sari and real gold jewelry, including earrings hung through her empty lobes. The holes at her base held rods to fit her onto a palanquin or processional chariot. Stella Kramrisch Collection, 1994-148-64."
