Summary

[edit]
Description
English: This is blueschist, a scarce, foliated, low-temperature, high-pressure metamorphic rock dominated by the deep blue-colored mineral glaucophane (Na2Mg3Al2Si8O22(OH)2 - sodium magnesium hydroxy-aluminosilicate). The relatively small dark red masses in the sample are garnet (click on the photo once or twice to zoom in).

This rock is in the Tillotson-Haystack Slice, a thrust sheet in the Green Mountains of northern Vermont. The thrust slice contains metamorphics of supposed Cambrian age. The blueschists varied from non-garnet bearing examples to garnetiferous examples to fuchsitic blueschist. Some blueschists had gneissic foliation (sometimes crenulated). Other rocks observed in the area include serpentinite, magnetitic serpentinite, putative eclogite, and actinolite rocks.

Locality: mountain-side talus piece on the forested slopes of Haystack Mountain-Tillotson Peak, southwest of Route 58 (= Hazens Notch Road), south of Hazens Notch, northern Green Mountains, northwestern Lowell Township, far-western Orleans County, northern Vermont, USA
