Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Gneiss xenolith in anorthosite in the Precambrian of New York State, USA.

The gray rocks in the photo are anorthosite, a coarsely-crystalline, intrusive igneous rock dominated by plagioclase feldspar. A major occurrence of this uncommon rock is in the Adirondack Mountains of New York State. In this area, the rocks have been regionally metamorphosed, but the overall mineralogy is the same.

The elongated, dark-colored, banded mass at center is a garnetiferous gneiss xenolith. Xenoliths ("foreign rocks") are pieces of rock that have fallen from the walls or roof of a cooling magma chamber, or have become entrained in rising masses of magma. Xenoliths can occur in intrusive igneous rocks or extrusive igneous rocks (= volcanic lava).

Geologic unit: Marcy Anorthosite, late Mesoproterozoic, 1.16 Ga

Locality: Saranac Lake West Outcrop - small roadcut on the northern side of Route 18, northwest to north of Lily Pad Pond, west of the town of Saranac Lake, southern Franklin County, central Adirondack Mountains, northeastern New York State, USA
